FT: "Wikipedia in Clash Over Editing Rights"

Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia co-founder, was on Friday invited to address around 50 employees at the Chime Communications-owned public relations agency by its co-founder, Lord Bell, after December’s sting by The Independent newspaper and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism recorded executives boasting of online manipulation and other “dark arts”.

“Our policy around editing by paid advocates is a bit mushy at the moment,” Mr Wales admitted.
“The problem with the current approach is what counts as a minor factual update [which is permitted] or asking the community first is a bit hard to judge.”
Much of Mr Wales’ half-hour presentation was an explanation of how corporate representatives can ask for misleading content to be removed or altered without breaking its editing rules. Emailing info@wikipedia.org or raising issues on community noticeboards should achieve a solution within hours or at most a day, he said.
