Library Design: Take a Look at the New National Library of Luxembourg that Opened Yesterday

October 2, 2019 by Gary Price

Multiple Reports.

From the Luxembourg Times:

After a decade of preparations, five years of construction and four months of moving more than 1.8 million books and documents, Luxembourg’s new national library…[opened] its doors on Tuesday.

The €111 million red building which spans just over 35,000 square metres stands along Kirchberg’s avenue J. F. Kennedy, next to the tram station of the same name – Bibliothéik.

The building also has a music room with an electric piano where people can go to practice the scores available. The room comes with special acoustics to block out sound, as is the case in the various ‘phone’ rooms dotted around the library.

There is also a family room with toys for children to play with and children’s books.

From Chronicle.Lu:

The inauguration brought together representatives from eleven national libraries in Europe, including those of France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Indeed, the British Library’s CEO, Roly Keating, who is also the current President of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL), delivered a keynote speech on “Building Libraries for the Future”.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held in June 2014. After more than ten years of planning, five years of construction and four months of relocating more than 40 km of documents, the new BnL will open its doors to the public today, Tuesday 1 October 2019, from 14:00. The opening hours have been extended: Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 18:00.
