A New One-on-One Interview with Susan E. Parker, University of British Columbia Library University Librarian

Susan E. Parker joined UBC in September 2017, as University Librarian. In her role, she is responsible for providing strategic oversight of the UBC Library system. She has held a number of leadership roles at Tufts and Harvard Law School (where she knew the young Barack Obama), before moving to California State University, Northridge, as the Associate Dean of the Oviatt Library and Associate Professor. Most recently, she served as the Deputy University Librarian and Chief Financial Officer at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The interview consists of 13 questions and answers. Here’s one exchange:

As UBC launches a new strategic plan, what role does UBC Library play in helping the university achieve its ambitions?

SP: The UBC Library in many ways is the heart of the university, because it touches everyone and powers the university’s academic success. The first thing we’ll be doing is to develop our own strategic framework from directions that have been outlined in UBC’s strategic plan. So that means we will identify new services and functions and revise or strengthen others in order to meet the needs of users, as we see them coming forward in the plan.
