New Version Available: Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing
From a Joint Announcement:
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) are scholarly organisations that have worked together to identify principles of transparency and best practice for scholarly journals. This is the fifth version of a work in progress (published xxxx 2026). We encourage its wide sharing.
The Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing apply to all published journal content, including special issues and conference proceedings. Where practices vary from the standards outlined, editors must clearly state the procedures that the journal follows.
COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME agree that these principles are the foundation of good publishing practice and that publishers must demonstrate that they are being met. Because these principles form the basis of eac organisation’s membership criteria, journals and publishers may need to explain when they do not comply with them.
