arXiv today announced the appointment of Dr. Penelope Lewis as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer and the eight members of its Board of Directors, marking two significant milestones in the organization’s transition to an independent nonprofit and strengthening its capacity to serve the global research community for generations to come.
For more than three decades, arXiv has enabled the rapid and open sharing of scientific research, becoming an essential part of the global scholarly communications ecosystem. As the platform has grown in scale, reach, and impact, arXiv has taken important steps to ensure its long-term sustainability, stewardship, and continued service to researchers worldwide, including spinning out as an independent nonprofit organization from Cornell University earlier this month. The appointment of its first CEO and creation of an international governing board establish a leadership framework designed to support its mission in the decades ahead.

Dr. Lewis brings nearly two decades of executive leadership experience in scholarly publishing, scientific communications, and mission-driven organizations. Most recently, she served as Chief Publishing Officer at AIP Publishing, a subsidiary of the American Institute of Physics. There, she led a transformation of the organization’s publishing portfolio, advancing innovation, operational excellence, and global engagement. Throughout her career, which includes senior leadership roles at the American Chemical Society, she has developed sustainable publishing programs and championed the needs of global researchers, including initiatives that advance research dissemination, integrity, and open access.
A scientist by training, Dr. Lewis holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The Pennsylvania State University and a B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University.

Dr. Lewis’ appointment as CEO will start on August 17.
