Accessing Archived Material From ERIC (Education Resource Information Center) via the Internet Archive & Elsewhere

April 23, 2025 by Gary Price

Here are a couple ways to access archived material from ERIC on the open web.

We will do our best to keep this post updated if/when new open web sources become available to access ERIC material.

At this hour (9pm EDT, April 23) the ERIC.ed.gov site/database remains accessible (and searchable). We do not know if the site will be taken offline or remain available.

Internet Archive and The Wayback Machine Options

The Internet Archive’s “ERIC Archive” contains 509,664 documents (as of 4/24/2025).

Here’s an example of a search for the phrase “school design”. The documents are available in PDF.

You can also search the ERIC Archive directly from the Wayback Machine homepage by selecting the collection files.eric.ed.gov (or many others) from the dropdown menu.

If you’re looking for EJ record(s) (journal citations/indexing/metadata and some full text articles) as well as ED material one method that might prove useful is to search one or more of the many End of Term (EOT) Web Archive crawls either via the homepage or going directly to the crawls web page.

Here’s the page to access 2024 EOT Web Crawl.

In the search box, enter site:eric.ed.gov <keyword(s)> to limit to material from the ERIC site.

Example: Here’s a search for the phrase “educational technology”.

Finally (for now), a few search tips when using an Internet Archive/Wayback special collection:

  • proximity search: “(vaccine COVID)~10”
  • Search for a specific site or TLD: “nuclear site:.gov” or “health site:ca.gov”.
  • Search for a specific year range: “guitar year:2010-2012” or “flute year:2009”.
  • Exclude a term from your search: “guitar -rock”.
  • You can also combine these keywords in the same query for more focused results.

Of course, many other tools both fee-based and free tools might also be useful to find journal articles/metadata that are included in ERIC. Resources include OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, and Lens.

More Options!!!

Update 2: The Data Rescue Project has alerted us to ERICA (ERIC Archive) search engine  and this downloadable dataset of ERIC pdfs (via Safeguarding Research & Culture).  Kudos to those involved in both projects!!

Update 1: We’ve learned there are multiple options to access ERIC materials from the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine. A few are described earlier in this post. The second, containing a slightly smaller collection but a few more facets to refine results is available here. Finally, a third version provides access to all material from ERIC including some EJ entries.
