Report: Trump Fires Colleen Shogan, Archivist of the United States

President Trump has fired Archivist of the United States Colleen J. Shogan, the government official responsible for preserving and providing access to government records.
Sergio Gor, director of the Presidential Personnel Office, announced Shogan’s dismissal Friday night. Shogan has held the job since 2023.

Earlier on LinkedIn, Shogan wrote: “This evening, President Trump fired me,” Shogan wrote. “No cause or reason was cited. It has been an honor serving as the 11th Archivist of the United States. I have zero regrets – I absolutely did my best every day for the National Archives and the American people.”

Shogan, who was nominated to the position by President Joe Biden in 2022, was the first woman to hold the post as head and chief administrator of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and previously served as senior vice president and director of the David M. It wasn’t immediately clear who will run the agency in her absence. Without further action by Trump, Deputy Archivist Jay Bosanko — a career employee — would automatically step in as the acting head of the Archives.

A former director of litigation at the Archives, Jason R. Baron, said he was troubled by Shogan’s ouster. He noted that federal law says the Archivist must be appointed “without regard to political affiliations and solely on the basis of … professional qualifications.” The statute also says the president must notify Congress about why the archivist was dismissed.
