Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Releases 2023 Salary Data and Statistics in Four New Reports

November 20, 2024 by Gary Price

From the ARL Salary Data Release:

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the ARL Annual Salary Survey 2023, which analyzes salary data for professional staff working in 126 of the 127 ARL member libraries during 2023. Data are reported for 11,118 professional staff from 120 university ARL libraries in Canada and the United States and for 2,044 professional staff of the 6 US federal, nonprofit, and public ARL libraries.

The ARL Annual Salary Survey 2023 analyzes salary data from a number of different perspectives, including race, ethnicity, and sex. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups make up 19% of the professional staff in US ARL university libraries; the percentage of individuals in managerial or administrative positions who are also from historically underrepresented groups is lower at 15%. Women make up 71% of historically underrepresented staff members. Sex-based salary differentials persist in ARL libraries in 2023. The overall salary for women in the 120 ARL university libraries is 95% of that paid to men.

From the ARL Statistics 2023 Post:

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the ARL Statistics 2023, ARL Academic Health Sciences Library Statistics 2023, and ARL Academic Law Library Statistics 2023.

These three publications present information describing the collections, staffing, expenditures, and service activities of 126 of the Association’s 127 member libraries in 2023. Of these 126 members, 120 are university libraries (16 in Canada and 104 in the US); the remaining 6 are governmental, nonprofit, and public research libraries in the US. The law and health sciences publications focus on the 73 law libraries and 60 medical libraries among the Association’s membership that completed the law and health sciences surveys.

The ARL libraries are a relatively small subset of libraries in Canada and the United States, but they account for a large portion of academic library resources in terms of assets and the number of users they serve. Members use these data to describe their operations and demonstrate how resources are used wisely for the benefit of their communities. The total expenditures (in US dollars) of all 126 member libraries in 2023 was $4.4 billion. In the same year, 32,179 full-time equivalent staff in ARL libraries made approximately 4.8 million contacts with their user communities through group presentations and reference transactions.
