As the Calgary Public Library reopened following a cyber breach last week, users can expect to see more pen and paper at their favourite branch.
About 20,000 people who visit the 22 CPL locations across the city daily were greeted by modified services that don’t require technology on Wednesday.
Another 20,000 CPL users visit online daily, said Mary Kapusta, communications and engagement director at the library.
“Almost immediately, our staff are like, OK, so how much service can we provide?” said Kapusta.

UPDATE October 14, 2024 (via Calgary Herald) Calgary Public Library Locations to Reopen Wednesday Without Technology in Wake of Cyber Breach
CPL has not publicly diagnosed the nature of the security breach that will have closed its locations for five days by the time they reopen. It said Monday that “some of our systems have been compromised” and that its security team is working to complete a thorough investigation.
“While many services will not be available during this process, we are committed to providing critical access to library spaces,” it wrote.
When libraries reopen Wednesday, users will be able to access the spaces and services that don’t require technology.

UPDATE October 12, 2024 (via Calgary Herald): Calgary Public Library Branches Still Closed Saturday Due to Cybersecurity Breach
Though the scope and cause of the breach remained unknown, the library closed all of its locations on Friday at 5 p.m., to mitigate the potential impacts. As a result of the incident, “all servers and library computer access will also be turned off,” CPL said in a statement
The library’s IT security team was working to determine the scope of the breach, the statement said, adding it will continue to provide updates of the closures when more information becomes available.
It did not provide a timeline for when its 21 locations would reopen, and a library spokesperson on Saturday morning told Postmedia the statement from Friday afternoon remained in effect.
