Report: “New Library Confidentiality Law Goes Into Effect Across Vermont Next Week: Are Our Librarians Ready?”
From WPTZ-TV:
When we’re checking out books at the library, our privacy usually isn’t top of mind, and understanding the power and right to it, is something learned with age.
Part of the law, S.220, will shift the confidentiality age from 16 to 12, so kids 12 and older can keep their library records private. However, librarians don’t have much time to adjust after Gov. Phil Scott signed the law earlier this month.
“When kids become sort of pre-adolescent is when they start questioning a lot and one is really forming their own identities. So, I think that there’s really just a lot of support for this law, in particular in the library community,” said Wendy Hysko, director of Brownell Library.
