Description

The HBCU Library Alliance, a voice of advocacy and body of knowledge for libraries in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, works to develop library leaders, preserve collections and plan for the future. Sandra M. Phoenix, Executive Director, describes the organization’s Sankofa Experience in remembering and embracing the past to make positive progress in the future. The session focuses on collections, HBCU Library Alliance programs, and ways we can together envision a future to strive toward.

About Sandra M. Phoenix

Sandra is Executive Director of the HBCU Library Alliance and is responsible for the overall operations of the organization. She has more than 30 years’ experience at nonprofit organizations and extensive project management experience. Prior to assuming this role, she served as Executive Services Librarian at LYRASIS. Sandra earned her MLS from Florida State University and her Bachelor’s degree from Savannah State University.

Sandra believes in the power of knowledge and the role of the library in strengthening community. She is committed to the goals and vision of the HBCU Library Alliance and its future directions in supporting HBCU libraries.

Sandra also enjoys the phenomenal gift of family, tending to her vegetable garden and the powerful message of the djembe drum.

Gary Price (gprice@gmail.com) is a librarian, writer, consultant, and frequent conference speaker based in the Washington D.C. metro area. He earned his MLIS degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. Price has won several awards including the SLA Innovations in Technology Award and Alumnus of the Year from the Wayne St. University Library and Information Science Program. From 2006-2009 he was Director of Online Information Services at Ask.com.
