Meet the 2021-22 NISO Board Of Directors

June 17, 2021 by Gary Price

From the National Information Standards Organization (NISO):

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is pleased to announce the results of its recent Board elections for the term beginning July 1, 2021. Mary Sauer-Games, Vice President, Product Management, OCLC, Inc, will transition to the role of Chair of the NISO Board, having served as Vice Chair for the past year. She is replaced as Vice Chair by Maria Stanton, Director of Production, Atla, who will assume the role of Chair for 2022-23 next July. Peter Simon, Vice President, Product Management, NewsBank, Inc, rotates to the position of Past Chair, having served as NISO Chair for 2020-21. In addition, Wayne Strickland, Acting Associate Director for the Office of Program Management, NTIS will be appointed Treasurer as of July 1.

NISO Voting Members have also elected three new Directors: Jonathan Clark, Managing Agent, DOI Foundation; Trevor Dawes, Vice Provost for Libraries and Museums and May Morris University Librarian, University of Delaware; and Salwa Ismael, Associate University Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Information Technology, University of California—Berkeley. They will serve on the Board for a three-year term from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024.

Three current members are rotating off the Board, with our thanks and appreciation for their service: Greg Grazevich, Associate Director, Bibliographic Information Services & Editor, MLA International Bibliography, Modern Language Association of America; Past Chair, Marian Hollingsworth, Director of Publisher Relations, Clarivate Analytics; and Treasurer, Jabin White, Vice President, Content Management for ITHAKA/JSTOR.

“I’m honored to be serving as NISO Chair for the next year,” said Mary Sauer-Games. “These are both challenging and exciting times for the organization, as we continue to look forward to a post-pandemic world and what that will mean for the information community. The Board and staff must work together with our 500+ volunteers to ensure that our standards and our educational programming continue to meet the needs of libraries, publishers, their vendors, and their users—while also looking ahead to new opportunities, such as building on the success of the NISO Plus conference to increase engagement with our work globally.”

Maria Stanton added, “As Co-Chair of our newly-formed DEI Committee, I’ve been closely involved in NISO’s efforts to improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in our community. I look forward to supporting these efforts further in my new role as Vice Chair, continuing to work with the Committee and the wider community to identify and prioritize concrete actions that NISO can take to effect real change.”

“In 2021, NISO was fortunate to have a groundswell of interest by the community in seeking leadership positions on the NISO Board of Directors,” noted Todd Carpenter, NISO’s Executive Director. “This is a strong signal of support for our organization, as well as a growing understanding of the impact that NISO has in the information community. We look forward to working with this new cohort of leaders  of our community.”
