Global Press Archive: Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and East View Release Third Open Access Collection Featuring Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers

July 22, 2020 by Gary Price

From CRL:

CRL and East View Information Services have released the Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers the third Open Access collection of titles digitized under the Global Press Archive (GPA) CRL Charter Alliance. This collection adds to the growing collection of Open Access material available through East View’s Global Press Archive program.

The Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers collection, with a preliminary release of 135,000 pages from 477 titles, will ultimately include approximately 1,000 titles from Mexico’s pre-independence, independence and revolutionary periods (1807-1929). The collection traces the evolution of Mexico during this pivotal period and provides rare documentation of the dramatic events of this era, including coverage of Mexican partisan politics, yellow press, political and social satire, as well as local, regional, national and international news.

Most of the titles were sourced from the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, a renowned research library at the University of Texas at Austin for area studies pertaining to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Latino presence in the United States.

The Independent and Revolutionary Mexican Newspapers(link is external) are a part of the GPA/CRL Charter Alliance, a multi-year, flagship collaboration between CRL and East View Information Services to deliver nine collections comprised of approximately 4.5 million pages of content, including 3 million pages of public domain or “orphaned” material available via open access. In addition to hosting on the GPA platform, East View will provide all of the files and metadata to CRL for local hosting, with eventual support for computational analysis available on request.
