Turnitin Signs Agreement with arXiv.org Pre-Print Repository

Turnitin today announced that it has secured a new content partnership with arXiv.org, which will see Turnitin services match against the global pre-print repository.
In addition to signing a Content License Agreement, arXiv have chosen to implement Turnitin’s iThenticate service, to assist them in checking the originality of papers uploaded to their repository. This move will help to protect the intellectual property of arXiv authors and allow Turnitin and iThenticate users to match against the arXiv database.

The alliance between arXiv and Turnitin means that authors’ papers are protected from potential misappropriation and that documents can now be compared against the full arXiv database and the Turnitin database, the most comprehensive in the world.

Q. Did arXiv reach out to Turnitin or vice/versa?
A. (Jim Entwood): In conjunction with our existing checks for overlap with articles within arXiv (https://arxiv.org/help/overlap) our Scientific Advisory Board recognized that there was a need for a tool to determine if a submission had overlap with external sources. We explored various options and decided that iThenticate best fit our need.
Currently we are running checks for external overlap on a subset of submissions that come in, optimizing our use of this tool to address the problem of plagiarism. This initial pilot of using iThenticate is a learning process and is providing feedback to staff and our volunteer moderators for where to most effectively direct our efforts.
Q. Can you share any financial details about the arrangement?
A. We can not provide the financial details.
Q. How will their technology be implemented?
A. For submissions that are flagged to be checked using iThenticate we put them in a hold status before they are published. Our administrators then upload submissions to iThenticate and get back a report that includes a score and highlighted sections of overlap with links to the matching sources. They then make a judgment call about whether to accept or reject the article. The supporting resources on the iThenticate website have been helpful in reading the reports and understanding various aspects of plagiarism.
Q. What happens if/when Turnitin discovers a potential issue?
If we do not find that the article contains plagiarism we release it from hold and it goes back into the queue to get published. If the article is determined to contain plagiarism we remove it from the system and notify the user.
Q. Do those contributing to arxiv have to do anything different or new?
No.
