Kansas: Librarians Concerned for Future of Shawnee Mission School Libraries
Note: Shawnee Mission, Kansas is an area located in Johnson County, KS located just across the border from Kansas City, MO.
From the Shawnee Dispatch:
A Shawnee school librarian represented the concerns of several librarians about the future of libraries in the Shawnee Mission school district.
Jan Bombeck, librarian at Ray Marsh Elementary in Shawnee, addressed the district’s board of education at its May 23 meeting, stating concerns about plans to change the functions of libraries in the schools to include Maker Spaces — plans that now do not require teachers in the library, now to be called “innovation specialists/innovation station teachers,” to have any sort of librarian certification — only an elementary teacher certification.
Librarian positions open at three district schools — none in Shawnee — already are being hired for this.
