Research Libraries: Three New Members of the ARL Board of Directors Elected, Alford Begins Term as President

Larry Alford, chief librarian at University of Toronto, began a one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, during the Association’s Fall 2015 Meeting in Washington, DC. Alford succeeds Deborah Jakubs, the Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway university librarian and vice provost for library affairs at Duke University, as ARL president. Jakubs continues to serve as a member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee as past president.
Also on October 7, the Association’s membership ratified the Board’s election of Mary Case, university librarian and dean of libraries at University of Illinois at Chicago, as ARL vice president/president-elect.
Three new Board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Lorraine Haricombe, vice provost and director of libraries, University of Texas at Austin; Steven Smith, dean of libraries, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and Ann Thornton, university librarian and vice provost, Columbia University.
Continuing elected members of the Board are: Susan Gibbons, university librarian and deputy provost for libraries and scholarly communication, Yale University; Richard E. Luce, dean of university libraries, professor and the Peggy V. Helmerich chair, and associate vice president for research, Norman Campus, University of Oklahoma; Bonnie MacEwan, dean of libraries, Auburn University; Mary Ann Mavrinac, vice provost and the Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly dean of the River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester; and John Wilkin, the Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson dean of libraries and university librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Also serving on the Board in ex officio capacities are: David H. Carlson, dean of university libraries, Sterling C. Evans chair, Texas A&M University, and Elliott Shore, executive director, Association of Research Libraries.
