The Association of Research Libraries today released three reports featuring 2013-2014 statistics.

ARL Statistics 2013–2014

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released the ARL Statistics 2013–2014, which presents data describing the collections, staffing, expenditures, and service activities of the Association’s 125 member libraries in fiscal year 2013–2014. Of these, 115 are university libraries (16 in Canada and 99 in the US); the remaining 10 are public, governmental, and nonprofit research libraries (1 in Canada, 9 in the US).
ARL libraries are a relatively small subset of libraries in North America, but they account for a large portion of academic library resources in terms of assets, budgets, and the number of users they serve. The total expenditures of all 125 member libraries in 2013–2014 were almost $4.7 billion; of that, approximately $3.4 billion was spent by the 115 university libraries and slightly more than $1.2 billion by the nonuniversity libraries.

ARL Academic Law Library Statistics 2013–2014

[The report] presents data describing collections, expenditures, personnel, and services in 74 law libraries at ARL member institutions in the US and Canada.
In fiscal year 2013–2014, the reporting law libraries held a median of 446,813 volumes, spent a total of $220,389,561, and employed 1,831 FTE staff. Expenditures for materials and staff accounted for the bulk of total expenditures, at approximately 48% and 44% respectively. Respondents reported spending a total of $16,635,085 in one-time resource purchases and $83,283,485 in ongoing resource purchases.

Comparison

In 2012–2013, the reporting law libraries held a median of 440,087 volumes, spent a total of $218,319,074, and employed 1,867 FTE staff. Expenditures for materials and staff accounted for the bulk of total expenditures, at approximately 48% and 44% respectively. Respondents reported spending a total of $17,656,543 in one-time resource purchases and $82,079,521 in ongoing resource purchases.

ARL Academic Health Sciences Library Statistics 2013–2014

[The report] presents data describing collections, expenditures, personnel, and services in 61 health sciences libraries at ARL member institutions in the US and Canada.
In fiscal year 2013–2014, the reporting health sciences libraries held a median of 195,029 volumes, spent a total of $246,725,299, and employed 1,783 FTE staff. Expenditures for materials and staff accounted for the bulk of total expenditures, at approximately 53% and 37% respectively. Respondents reported spending a total of $ $7,490,001 in one-time resource purchases and $119,290,552 in ongoing resource purchases.

In 2012–2013, the reporting health sciences libraries held a median of 199,770 volumes, spent a total of $244,887,038, and employed 1,814 FTE staff. Expenditures for materials and staff accounted for the bulk of total expenditures, at approximately 50% and 36% respectively. Respondents reported spending a total of $8,217,463 in one-time resource purchases and $110,224,500 in ongoing resource purchases.
