Portugal’s B-on Consortium Signs Digital Preservation Agreement With Portico
From a Portico Announcement:
Portico and the B-on Consortium are pleased to announce an agreement to expand Portico’s digital preservation services to research and academic libraries in Portugal. The B-on Consortium represents about 70 higher education institutions, research institutions, and other public bodies.
“Over the past eight years, the B-on Consortium has delivered access of digital scholarly content across the Portuguese academic and scientific community, and our participation in Portico helps protect our investment in published e-resources,” commented Pedro Veiga, chairman of Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN), the entity responsible for B-on. “Portico is enabling B-on to accelerate its transition to a reliance on e-resources by providing a reliable and trustworthy digital preservation service.”
Launched in 2004, B-on provides online access to the main international sources of scientific content in Portugal. Its technical infrastructure, user support, and the relationship with the publishers and other content suppliers, including the digital preservation relationship with Portico, are ensured by FCCN.
“B-on’s commitment to digital preservation represents a great development for higher education institutions in Portugal,” stated Kate Wittenberg, managing director of Portico. ” We are thrilled to now see libraries from 14 countries working together through Portico.”
