Magazine Launches Outpace Closures in First Quarter of 2012: MediaFinder Reports 52 Magazine Launches and 12 Closures

In the first quarter of 2012, 52 magazines launched and 12 magazines closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications.
The top category for new magazine launches was “restaurants,” with five new DiningOut guides from Pearl Publishing. The other top categories for new launches were “hunting & fishing,” with four new titles from J.F. Griffin Publishing and “lifestyle,” with four new magazines, including Bloomberg Pursuits. Among the12 magazines that folded were Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade and Spa.
Compared to the same quarter of 2011, the number of magazine closures slowed from 24 last year to 12 this year. In 2011, new magazine launches in the first quarter numbered 54, compared to 52 launches in 2012.
“In the first quarter of 2012, we are seeing luxury magazines make a comeback with Bloomberg launching Bloomberg Pursuits and Reuters,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “In the same period, Time Inc. revived Time Style & Design.”
Among business-to-business magazines, eight titles launched, such as Professional Yacht Broker, and two titles folded, Pharmaceutical Representative and Heat Treating Progress.
