Europe: IMPACT Centre of Competence Aims to Make Historical Text Digitisation Faster and Cheaper
On 25 October 2011 Mr. Khalil Rouhana, Director for digital content and cognitive systems in DG Information Society and Media at the European Commission officially launched the IMPACT Centre of Competence at the IMPACT final conference in London.
The IMPACT Centre of Competence aims to make digitisation of historical printed text in Europe better, faster, cheaper and provide the tools, services and mechanisms for further advancement in this field. The Centre will bring together leading lights involved in all aspects of digitisation and give invaluable access to a network of experts, research and content institutions throughout the industry.
At the launch the new website, www.digitisation.eu, was revealed as well, after which Aly Conteh and Hildelies Balk-Pennington de Jongh gave a brief introduction of the IMPACT Centre of Competence. Representatives from the Bibliothèque National de France (BNF) and the Fundación Biblioteca Virtual Miguel De Cervantes, who will together host the IMPACT Centre of Competence, then took to the floor to present and discuss the reasons behind their decision to back the Centre.
