Mary Meeker, a Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner, released her latest report on “Internet Trends” on Tuesday.
The 66-page report, distributed in conjunction with her appearance at a technology conference in San Francisco, touched on the rise of China, the vast potential of the smartphone market, the migration of ad dollars to the Web and the empowerment of communities through mobile devices.
Yet, for all the promise of the Web, Ms. Meeker, a former Morgan Stanley analyst turned venture capitalist, also outlined a sobering picture for the United States economy. Describing the economy as fraught with uncertainty, she highlighted the huge debt load; the volatility of the equity markets, which are trading two times above the historical average; and feeble consumer confidence. In her closing slides, Ms. Meeker said there was an upside: America’s economic problems are at least known.
