This year’s honorary spokesperson is baseball Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken Jr.
Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Thousands of public and school libraries join together each fall in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
Btw, although this month is targeted at parents and kids there are many adults, people who have not used a library in years (if ever) who would also benefit from the services and tools that a library card provides can help them access. Plus, it’s likely that many of these “carddless” people don’t realize the growing number of services (including help from a librarian) that are accessible to them 24x7x365 from wherever they can access the Internet. So, while getting cards into the hands of children is 100% essential we also need to get them back into the hands of users who have little to no idea about what a 21st century library card can offer them with both inside and outside of the actual library building.
