International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Releases 2025 Annual Report

July 24, 2026 by Gary Price

From an IFLA Post:

The 2025 edition covers the first full year of our 2024–29 Strategy and is structured around its three Impact Areas as well as our work to future-proof the Federation. Overall, 2025 shows ongoing progress: stronger connections, more impactful advocacy, deeper investment in capacity and futures, and a sharper focus on sustainability.

Some highlights

  • We connected information professionals through our first ever World Library and Information Congress in the Central Asia region, and saw a significant increase in the federation’s international membership.
  • Our biennial election cycle saw a turnout of over 50%, with the highest number of competitive elections in recent years.
  • We released a Volunteer Code of Conduct and five new or fully updated Standards; this is more in the last two years than in the previous six combined. Our IFLA Journal published a near-record 75 articles and the Repository was boosted with over 800 new entries, preserving key outputs and IFLA’s collective intelligence and insight, including some remarkable historical archives that tell the story of IFLA’s first century.
  • Our global advocacy efforts brought IFLA’s voice to high-level summits like COP30 and the UN General Assembly to promote libraries as essential cultural and social infrastructure. We also connected global and national mobilisation through UNESCO’s endorsement of the updated IFLA School Library Manifesto, giving the field both practical guidance and an advocacy tool.
  • We also linked capacity-building more closely with partnerships and sustainability, and invested in regional capacity to help libraries build the networks and skills to secure grants and partnerships — and deliver on them.
