New Book Recommends Standards for 3D Data Preservation, Print and OA Editions Available

Head of Data Services at the University Libraries, Jennifer Moore, is the co-editor of a recently published book on 3D data preservation and management. 3D Data Creation to Curation: Community Standards for 3D Data Preservation (CS3DP) is published by the Association of College and Research Libraries and is available in both print and electronic open access editions.

The book developed from a National Leadership Grants for Libraries Program award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a collaborative project between Washington University Libraries, University of Iowa Libraries, and the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology.

Moore has co-edited the book with Adam Rountrey, collection manager and 3D data specialist at the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology, and Hannah Scates Kettler, head of digital scholarship at Iowa State University.

The book is a foundational resource for all new and experienced users of 3D data across institutions, industry, and academic disciplines, as well as those “who may not be involved in the creation of data but are tasked with curating, migrating, and sustaining access to these data long-term” (American Library Association). It contains seven chapters by thirty-five contributors representing a wide variety of academic institutions. CS3DP grew out of forums, discussions, and surveys within the interdisciplinary 3D data community.

The book recommends standards and best practices for preserving 3D data through a discussion of several distinct and interconnected topics: metadata and documentation, long-term repository storage and management, articulation of rights and ownership, and restrictions and access.
