Research Resource: Open Database of  8,000 Cultural and Art Facilities Across Canada

October 2, 2020 by Gary Price

From Statistics Canada:

The Open Database of Cultural and Art Facilities (ODCAF) is now available as part of the Linkable Open Data Environment (LODE) initiative of Statistics Canada. The LODE aims to enhance the use, accessibility and harmonization of open microdata from authoritative sources such as governments and professional associations. It also supports collaboration around open data and their use towards production of official statistics and for geospatial research. The current version (Version 1.0) of the ODCAF contains information on approximately 8,000 art and cultural facilities across Canada.

Facilities in the ODCAF are classified into one of nine facility types: art or cultural centre, artist, festival site, gallery, heritage or historic site, library or archive, museum, theatre/performance and concert hall, and miscellaneous. The ODCAF contains the following information: name of the facility, source facility type (as contained in the data source), ODCAF facility type, data provider, address of facility, city, province or territory, latitude and longitude, and an index number for each record.

Data were collected from January 2020 to July 2020. The da tabase leverages both open and publicly available data. The ODCAF is provided as open data under the Open Government License – Canada.
