From NYC to Grand Forks: Stephanie Walker Named Dean of Libraries and Information Resources at University of North Dakota

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Thomas DiLorenzo has appointed Stephanie Walker as UND’s Dean of Libraries and Information Resources. Currently the Chief Librarian & Executive Director of Academic Information Technology at City University of New York’s Brooklyn College, Walker will assume her duties on Sept. 16.

Since 2008, Stephanie Walker has been Chief Librarian & Executive Director of Academic Information Technology at City University of New York’s Brooklyn College, a senior college with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students. This is a dual role, encompassing both the Library and support for teaching and research with technology. The latter includes oversight of a Faculty Training & Development Lab and a 24/7 Library Café for students, management of more than 2,800 online courses, and oversight of a technology training program.
She has extensive experience in strategic planning. Recently, she coordinated development of a new Strategic Plan for the Library & Academic IT, and collaborated with Campus IT to develop and implement a strategic plan for IT as a whole. She also restructured the Library & Academic IT to formalize the role of innovation and entrepreneurship. She has overseen development of many entrepreneurial initiatives, often involving collaborations with partners. She has also managed renovations of the Library’s physical space, and led the growth of virtual services including 24/7 chat reference, a redesigned website, new rapid interlibrary loan services, participation in an institutional repository including digital collections and data services, and more.
Previously, she held the positions of Associate Librarian for Information Services at Brooklyn College; Manager of Collection Services, Technical Services, & Library IT at Harvard Medical School; Dean & University Librarian at Mount Saint Vincent University in Nova Scotia; Director of the Library at the University of Toronto at Scarborough; and Faculty Librarian for the University of Toronto’s Dental Library.
A native of Canada, Walker earned both her Honor Bachelor of Arts and Master of Art in English from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. She also received her Master of Library Science from the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario.
