Librarian of Congress Names New Director of National and International Outreach & New COO at LC
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today named distinguished scholar and academic administrator Jane McAuliffe to the position of director of National and International Outreach.
The position is created to lead a newly established unit of Library operations that will coordinate the Library’s diverse and dynamic outreach programs, including scholarly, educational, and interpretive programs, national and international outreach programs and fee-for-service enterprises.
The Librarian also named as Chief Operating Officer Edward Jablonski, a position to be housed within the Office of the Librarian. Jablonski’s office will oversee the Library’s institution-wide support structure, including its human resources, contracts and grants management, the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and the Office of the Chief Information Officer, facilities management and security.
McAuliffe came to the Library in 2014 as director of the John W. Kluge Center for scholars and head of the Library’s Office of Scholarly Programs.
During her tenure as president of Bryn Mawr College, from 2008 to 2013, McAuliffe led the creation of a 10-year, college-wide strategic plan, inaugurated a major in international studies and a minor in environmental studies, built a global presence for the school through student recruitment as well as university partnerships in Europe, the Middle East and Asia and partnered with the U.S. Department of State to develop the Women in Public Service Program. During her presidency the college saw applications rise to a record high, innovative curricular programs launched, three important campus buildings redesigned and restored, and two of the top five gifts in the school’s history secured.
She previously served nine years as dean of arts and sciences at Georgetown University, as professor and department chair at the University of Toronto and as professor and associate dean at Emory University.
Jablonski previously served for 30 years in the U. S. Navy. He served on five nuclear-powered submarines with responsibilities that included chief engineer during the new construction of USS Norfolk and commanding officer of the USS Topeka. Capt. Jablonski completed his sea duty assignments as the commanding officer of the surface ship USS McKee, with over 1,300 crewmembers. He also served in management positions on the staffs of the Naval Sea Systems Command, the U.S. Central Command, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Secretary of the Navy and the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.
His responsibilities included coordinating Navy and Marine Corps budget formulation, justification and execution as the assistant director in the Department of Navy Office of Budget.
