PubMed Central (PMC) Now Including Converted Multimedia Files in Downloads of Open Access Subset Articles
From a PubMed Central E-Mail:
As you might know, PMC converts some multimedia files within the supplementary materials of articles in its collection into formats that are amenable to serving on the web. Recently we have begun to include these converted versions of these resources, for the open-access subset, in the archive files for these articles.
Example
The PLoS Biology article, “Migratory Sleeplessness in the White-Crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii)”, PMC449897, contains four supplemental videos. These can be retrieved in converted formats, as follows:
- Use the OA service to determine the location of the archive file for this article: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/utils/oa/oa.fcgi?id=PMC449897
- Download the archive file, from ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pub/pmc/68/e4/PLoS_Biol_2004_Jan_20_2(1)_e8.tar.gz
- Extract it, and you will see the originals (.mov) as well as three converted versions for each of the four videos.
- The converted files use the filename suffix “-pmcvs_normal” to indicate that these are PMC converted versions.
