Weinberg Foundation Ups Commitment to Build School Libraries
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, an organization that focuses its grants on programs that meet basic needs such as health, socialization and housing, recently announced a four-year $5 million commitment that will build on previous funding for the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project.
The Weinberg Foundation has already committed $2 million to the project, which plans to build 12 new libraries in Baltimore City Public Schools. Along with contribution from 30 government partners, businesses and nonprofits, the Library Project will design, build, staff and provide supplies to elementary and middle school libraries, including e-readers and customized furniture.
“The Weinberg Foundation’s generous commitment to developing libraries will brighten the future for thousands of Baltimore City schoolchildren,” said Patrick McCarthy, president and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. “It is critically important that children learn to read proficiently by third grade, and when they successfully accomplish that, they will read to learn throughout life.”
