The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services Outstanding Publication Award recipient for 2011 is Karen Coyle for her “Understanding the Semantic Web: Bibliographic Data and Metadata,” published in Library Technology Reports, January 2010, by ALA Techsource.
The Outstanding Publication Award is an annual award given to honor the author or authors of the year’s outstanding monograph, article or original paper in the field of technical services, including acquisitions, cataloging, collection management, preservation, continuing resources and related areas in the library field. Ms. Coyle will receive a citation and $250 sponsored by ALCTS.
“Understanding the Semantic Web” is an insightful articulation about how library catalogs must transition to become part of the current information environment. It is timely and provocative, pushing librarians to think beyond today’s catalog and current practices and look at the future of library catalogs and how to best use the library catalog to reach current user populations. In this thought-provoking and transformative publication, Coyle breaks new ground while still offering practical guidelines about how to achieve the goals set out for libraries to move the catalog into the Semantic Web and transform the role of library metadata in today’s Web driven world.
Karen Coyle is a librarian and a consultant in the area of digital libraries. She worked for more than 20 years at the University of California in the California Digital Library, has served on library and information standards committees and has written frequently on such technical topics as metadata development, technology management and system design, as well as on policy areas such as copyright and privacy.
